Guitar No. 2 _ The Top
The making of the top of an archtop is something special. Lots of wood are converted into even more shavings.
Preparing of the top joint. |
Gluing of the top. |
Along the contor lines I drilled a rows of holes with a drill press. |
I removed the excess wood with a chisel. |
A special plane for violin building did the final carving. |
It took me about eight hours of carving to reach this state. |
Now I drilled the back side with the drill press. The depth stop was adjusted to a thickness of 9mm. |
During the process of carving. |
The inner side finished. |
The braces are made of this old and fine grained piece of spruce. |
I cut the f-holes with a jigsaw. |
Gluing of the plastic bindings. |
The braces were glued one after another to the top. |
The finished top from the inner side... |
... and the external side. |
This is an attempt to adjust the tonebars in the way that Siminoff describes in his book. Tapping on the different bars I allways heard the same tone (between D and D#) that did not change significantly even after shaving away about 3mm of the tonebars... |
